Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the country. It’s important that you take the time to find a properly trained doctor or technician – like one of our staff members – to perform your treatment. If done improperly, this procedure does carry the risk of scarring.

For several weeks prior to the procedure, you will need to stop shaving, tweezing or waxing. This is because the laser targets the root of each hair, which waxing and tweezing temporarily removes. Shaving must be avoided so that the hair is of an appropriate length for the laser to target.

Winter is an ideal time to begin laser hair removal treatment because patients must avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before and after treatment. Since no one wants to spend the summer months heavily clothed or hiding from the sun, winter is the most convenient time to undergo treatment.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before the procedure, your hair will be trimmed to an optimal length for laser removal. Your technician will select a laser that is appropriate for your unique hair and skin. This laser will be used to pulse an intense ray of light directed at your hair follicles, which destroys the hair at the root.

A preliminary laser pulse will be directed at the treatment area to confirm the efficacy of the laser selection, as well as to check for any negative reactions. Following this test pulse, the entire procedure will be completed. Some sessions can last as little as 15 minutes, while more involved procedures may last up to 2 hours – this is mostly dependent on the size of the area being treated. After the session is completed, you will be given cooling gels or ice packs to decrease any burning sensations and discomfort.

Aftercare and Side Effects

Following a session of laser hair removal, the treatment area will look and feel as though it has been sunburned. Blistering is rare, but may occur in some cases. You can use cooling packs and lotions to help reduce tenderness and irritation. As mentioned previously, you must take care to avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight. Cover the treated areas of your body with clothing, or apply sunscreen if you cannot avoid sunlight. Tanning beds are also to be completely avoided.

The sooner you schedule a consultation, the quicker you’ll be on your way to a smoother and sexier you! While you’re bundled up in your wooly sweaters this winter, you can work toward the silky and polished summer body you’ve always desired.
